          Maximilien-Marie-Isidore de Robespierre was born in Arras on 6 May 1758.

          He was baptised the same day in the Church of St Mary Magdalene (opposite the Abbey-Palace of Saint-Vaast) ; his parents therefore were living in that parish, but it is not known exactly where.

          The family was of old Artois stock, and included many men of law and merchants in the region of Lens and Carvin.

          His grandfather, Maximilien de Robespierre, an advocate, moved to Arras in 1731.
