          6. African American communities have often been portrayed as passive victims to alcohol and other drug problems (AOD) within their communities. Such portrayals fail to capture the long history of indigenous resistance to and recovery from such problems among African Americans and their community institutions.

          As part of a larger effort to reconstruct the history of addiction treatment and recovery within African American communities in the United States, the authors would like to briefly profile a few of the African Americans who addressed, and are addressing, AOD problems in the United States.

          Admittedly, the very brief summaries also do not do full justice to the depth and duration of contributions of many of those profiled.  That said, we hope readers will conclude this brief review with a new appreciation of the forces of resistance and recover
